Our Footprint
)
To cut down on our climate footprint, we need to know exactly where we’re stepping, right? In 2022, we rolled up our sleeves and took a deep dive into our entire value chain. We applied the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and broke our emissions down into three key categories:
Scope 1: Direct Emissions
These come straight from sources we own or control – like the fuel for the running of our vehicles or on-site equipment.
Scope 2: Indirect Emissions from Purchased Energy
This covers the emissions related to the energy we buy, such as electricity, heating and cooling. We might not generate this energy ourselves, but it’s still part of our overall impact.
Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions
Scope 3 is the emissions from the entire value chain. It includes everything from raw materials and factory production to transportation, retail, product use, and even disposal. In fact, about 95% of our total emissions come from Scope 3.
Since 2022, we’ve been tracking our data every year and have now collected three years of data. We’re thrilled that we didn’t just settle for a basic spend- or activity-based method. Instead, we went the extra mile by digging deep into our suppliers’ climate impact, gathering detailed data that covers 90% of our supplier spend. It was hard work, but we believe it was totally worth it to get a clear picture of where we can make the biggest improvements.
Our Goal
)
Our goal is big: by 2030, we’re aiming to cut our carbon footprint by 50% from our 2022 baseline. This target is in line with the United Nations Paris Agreement’s requirement to limit global warming to 1.5°C. We’re happy to see that we’ve already made significant progress, reducing our footprint by 30% compared to our 2022 numbers.
Looking ahead, our biggest challenge lies in tackling materials, which account for 70% of our total climate impact. Many of the technologies required to address these challenges are still under development and not yet available on a commercial scale. We’re actively engaging with research institutes, industry associations and innovative companies to stay ahead of the curve. We look forward to seeing promising pilot projects move from the lab to the marketplace in the coming years, opening up new ways to further reduce our impact.
Here are some of our key actions:
Optimising production locations and transportation routes.
Sourcing materials closer to production sites.
Using air freight only in unforeseen and critical situations.
Shifting to renewable energy sources in operations and encouraging our suppliers to do the same.
Continuously updating our material strategy to incorporate new innovative materials.
Increasing the share of recycled and renewable materials in our products and packaging.
Working together with our suppliers to reduce the environmental impact from production, use and waste.
Sourcing with sustainability as one of the key parameters.
Optimising our supply chain and setting clear expectations for our suppliers and business partners –updating SOPs, CoC, etc.
Our Materials
)
When looking at our climate footprint, material accounts for around 70% of our total climate impact. That’s a big chunk, right? Therefore, we’re gearing up to implement a new material strategy that aims to reduce our environmental impact.
We’re already working hard to find new, innovative and more sustainable materials and manufacturing techniques. However, finding materials that tick the sustainability box while still aligning with our high safety and quality standards is tricky. This is a long-term effort that requires a lot of research, testing and tweaking.
Take, for instance, our attempt a couple of years ago to turn corn into plastic. Sadly, after months of hard work, we were forced to accept that our corn-based plastic didn’t quite make the grade quality-wise, meaning we were unable to use it in any of our products. While our attempt to transform corn into plastic hit a roadblock, it underscores our commitment to pushing boundaries. We may encounter setbacks, but we’ll keep on working to find new, more sustainable materials.
Packaging
)
Packaging plays a vital role in safeguarding our products during their journey to you. Our packaging is designed to be sturdy enough to withstand the bumps and jolts of transportation. It’s also cleverly crafted to stack more efficiently, maximising shipment capacity and consequently reducing the number of transports.
We are currently
swapping all our plastic moulds for cardboard moulds.
replacing plastic windows with windows crafted from renewable and recycled materials.
removing all plastic handles.
enhancing the durability of our product packaging, which allows our products to be shipped without an extra outer box and reduces the number of materials we use in shipments.
transitioning from colour-printed boxes to brown boxes.
gradually moving packaging production closer to our distribution centres, thus diminishing the need for global shipping.
Production and Suppliers
)
Nearly half of our production takes place in Sweden – this is where most of our plastic, steel and wood components are produced. Meanwhile, our fabrics and sewing are handled by our trusted partners in various countries around the globe.
Even though we don’t own any factories, this doesn’t mean we shy away from responsibility. On the contrary, we take full accountability for the climate impact of our production. That’s why we carefully choose suppliers located close to our distribution centres to minimise transportation emissions, and we work hand in hand with them to reduce our environmental footprint.
We have long-standing relationships with our suppliers, many of whom we’ve worked with for decades. Together, we’re constantly exploring new ways to improve – whether it’s cutting energy and water consumption, optimising material use or reducing waste. In collaboration with our suppliers, we’re brainstorming and implementing innovative production methods aimed at decreasing energy and water consumption, curbing material use and reducing waste.
We’ve also collected detailed climate impact data from over 90% of our supplier base, and track it year after year. This comprehensive data covers everything from their energy consumption (including whether this energy is renewable) to the amounts of materials, components and water used, and even how much waste is generated during production.
Here are some of the improvements that have been made at our suppliers’ factories:
Shifting to fossil-free and/or renewable energy.
Introducing new cooling systems to cut down on energy and water consumption.
Swapping older, energy-intensive machines for newer, more efficient equipment.
Switching existing lighting to energy-efficient LED lamps.
Installing solar panels.
Reducing transports.
Finding new ways to reduce waste.
The well-being of everyone involved in bringing our products to life is essential to us. We strive to provide a safe, diverse, fair and inclusive workplace, whether it’s in our own operations or our suppliers’. You can read all about our work here.
We take pride in our comprehensive supplier audit programme, which helps us ensure that working conditions and practices meet our high standards. By 2025, our goal is to include 80% of our purchasing value from both Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers in these audits. We always focus on social aspects, and we’re now ramping up our environmental reviews as well, building on the regular climate impact data we collect.
Transportation and Freight
)
We’re continually fine-tuning the routes for transporting materials, components and products. We aim to decrease the total distance travelled per product.
We’ve made great progress in cutting down on air freight over the past two years, from 140 shipments to 43 – a decrease of 69%. Despite this, we know that simply counting air shipments is a pretty rough measure because it doesn’t reflect the full picture. That’s why, starting next year, we’re introducing a more specific KPI: In addition to tracking the number of air shipments, we’ll also measure the CO2e emissions from all our air freight.
We’re committed to further reducing our emissions and minimising our transportation footprint, which is why we plan to launch a pilot route in 2025 to shift from truck transports to trains.
Baby Steps Towards a Better Future
)
When looking at our overall climate impact, our operations, such as facilities, business travel and IT, only account for 3–4% of this impact. Nevertheless, we firmly believe that every action counts. Here are some of the steps we’re taking in our operations to contribute to a better future.
A Sunshine Story
We’ve installed solar panels outside our logistics centre in Lanna, Sweden. The system is now up and running, providing clean energy every sunny hour. Thanks to this, we’ve significantly reduced the amount of electricity we need to purchase for our operations.
Driving Change
One of our key priorities when we were selecting a new location for our head office was to ensure easy accessibility via public transport. To encourage cycling to and from work, we offer convenient parking solutions for bicycles. When car travel is necessary, we’re committed to minimising our climate impact. As part of this commitment, we’re gradually transitioning from conventional company cars to electric vehicles.
Our Office Practices
Our offices are designed with sustainability in mind. Energy-efficient LED lamps equipped with motion detection ensure that lights are only on in occupied areas. We’ve simplified waste sorting with labelled bins, and our office printers are programmed to operate on demand, effectively reducing paper and ink waste.
Although the efforts at our offices may not single-handedly save the world, they serve as a reminder to us all to make more responsible choices.
Sustainability Beyond the Environment
)
For us, sustainability is about more than just reducing environmental impact – it’s also about people.
It means ensuring safe and fair working conditions for everyone involved in our production and always prioritising the well-being of children. From responsible material choices to high safety standards, every decision we make is driven by a commitment to a better future for both people and the planet.
