A Lifelong Commitment to Safety

For over 25 years, Dr. Mark Brandenburg has combined medical expertise with a deep commitment to child safety. As an emergency physician, epidemiologist, and father of two, he knows how crucial prevention is. Together with BabyBjörn, he’s helped shape safer products that give parents peace of mind. In this interview, he shares what drives his passion for protecting the smallest lives.
Hi Mark, tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m an emergency physician and an epidemiologist from the United States. My wife Kelly and I have two boys who long ago outgrew their cribs.
You’ve been committed to baby safety for more than 25 years.
An early part of my career was spent in pediatric trauma. There are so many tragedies happening in the emergency department, and when they involve children it is especially painful and emotional. Writing a book about how to prevent these tragedies from happening was kind of therapy, in a way. It became very personal for me.
Someone once said that “when you save a baby, you save the world.” This made perfect sense to me. So, when BabyBjörn reached out, it was a no brainer to work with a company that has the same passion as me to prevent injuries.
How did you become involved with BabyBjörn?
I had published a book called Child Safe. From what I understand, Björn Jakobson (the founder of BabyBjörn) had read the book and taken an interest in improving BabyBjörn’s products. He sent two of his engineers to Oklahoma to meet me.
That meeting resulted in a product development project, the cradle. And that was the beginning of the partnership I've had with BabyBjörn now for 18 years. Since then, I’ve been involved in the development of almost all BabyBjörn products, at the very least in the conceptual discussions and the reviews of the product before they went to market.
As a safety expert, what do you do during the product development process?
My role is not to give praise and positive reviews but to look critically at the products to see if there is anything that potentially could be hazardous. The goal is to produce products that do not have such potential hazards. So, my role is primarily to be a critic and to discuss solutions with product developers and engineers to fix potential hazards.
“Babies are the most honest human beings on earth.”
Can you give an example of such a safety solution?
A good example is the mesh sidings on the crib and the cradle. We talked early on about how breathable material like mesh could be the solution for enhancing the breathability of the product. And with the cradle, we also looked at the tilting to make sure the tilt angle was minimal to prevent any issues for the baby lying in it.
Is there a way for parents to know when their baby is comfortable?
There is. What I have taught my medical students and emergency medicine residents is that when you have a baby and you're interacting with that baby, and they're presented to the emergency department with certain complaints or possible illnesses or injuries, you can trust when the baby smiles because babies are the most honest human beings on Earth. They will cry when they're upset. They will show you they're not necessarily happy. And when they smile, you can believe that.
The same is true for parents. Parents can trust their baby when they’re in the carrier and smiling. They will know they're comfortable.
“When you save a baby, you save the world.”
